The Baxter Society announces the 2005 Stephen Harvard
Prize for Excellence in the Book Arts

The Stephen Harvard Prize is designed to stimulate interest in the book arts, and to support book artists and artisans. It honors the memory and work of Stephen E. Harvard(1948-1988), book designer, typographer, calligrapher, engraver, printer and late Honorary Member of the Baxter Society. The prize has been awarded five times in approximate 3-year cycles, beginning in 1990.

ELIGIBILITY
Book artists and artisans of Maine may submit no more than three completed works, finished after September, 2002. Submissions may fall into one or more of the following categories: overall production, overall design, printing, illustration, photography, typography, calligraphy, papermaking for a book, and binding. Book authorship alone is not eligible. Members of the Baxter Society may compete for the award; artisans selected to work on club publications may also enter their contributions. No winner of the Stephen Harvard Prize may win two consecutive competitions for the top prize. Final interpretation of the rules is in the hands of the club's Awards Committee.

PRIZES
The winner of the Stephen Harvard Prize will be awarded $500 by the Baxter Society at its regular meeting, 9 November 2005. The prize may be divided among more than one winner at the judges' discretion. The judges will also select a runner-up to receive a prize of $250, also divisible at the judges' discretion. The award-winning books will be displayed in a special exhibition at the Abplanalp Library, UNE-Westbrook, following the competition.

JUDGES
Three judges selected by the Awards Committee will select the winning entries based on those which best exemplify the values of book excellence for which Stephen Harvard was known. Judges are selected based on their state, regional or national distinction in the book and related arts. Any judge having direct involvement in an entry will refrain from voting on that entry. At this posting, selection of judges is underway but not final. Judges will convene after the submission deadline to examine and evaluate all entries.
