In late 1983 a group of book lovers, among whose principals
were: Grace Barney, supporter of Special Collections at Bowdoin College
and the PortlandPublic Library and extraordinary private book collector;
Francis O'Brien, the dean of Maine Antiquarian booksellers; and David
Turner, owner of Carlson-Turner Bookstore. The Society is named in honor of James Phinney Baxter, 1831-1921, Portland mayor and philanthropist whose gifts provided the first permanent building for the Portland Public Library in 1888. The first meeting was held prior to a lecture sponsored by the Anthoensen Press at the Portland Public Library. Thereafter regular monthly meetings led to the adoption of the Constitution and By-Laws and the first annual meeting in December, 1984. The founding members: |
