Meetings

MEETINGS:
Regular meetings of the Society are held on the second Wednesday of each month from September to May at 7:30 in the evening. The meetings are currently held in the Glickman Library on the fourth floor at the University of Maine, located at 314 Forest Avenue, Portland, Maine. The regular meeting in December is an annual meeting for election of officers, which has been combined with a Christmas party or special seasonal event.

Visitors are welcome; members are invited to bring guests.

RECENT and UPCOMING EVENTS:

SUMMER PROGRAM(s). We are trying to firm up a visit date for MHS new library and a trip to Stone House (with Center for Book Arts). Details to follow as they develop.

March. 10th: Good, Bad, and Indifferent, Old, New and Worthless: Thomas Jefferson and the Mind of the Eighteenth Century Collector - Mark Dimunation - Chief of Rare Books and Special Collections at the Library of Congress

April.14- Title TBA - Bill and Vicky Stewart, Vamp & Tramp, Booksellers

May. 12- Title TBA - Thomas A. Horrocks, Assoc. Librarian for Collections, Houghton Library, Harvard University.

SPECIAL ACTIVITIES:
The Baxter Society will be hosting a Book Sale at Eliot Stanley's house. 15 Seeley Ave. July 19th and 20th. Tentatively, 8am to 4pm.

THE STEVEN HARVARD AWARD:
In 1990 the Baxter Society established the Steven Harvard award for excellence in the book arts to honor the memory and work of our late Honorary member, a gifted designer, printer and calligrapher. This prize has been awarded every two to three years.

In addition to the Stephen Harvard Prize, there were three runner-ups in the competition: The Ascensius Press of Portland; Designer/publisher Peter E. Randall; and Anne-Claude Cotty were all honored for their various projects.

THE NANCY COWAN LECTURE:Nancy Cowan was a former president and notable member of Baxter for whom a special in memoriam lecture is held once a year.

MEMBERSHIP: There are two categories of membership: Active and Honorary. Membership dues are now $30.
